The Art of Incredible Mikhail Zlatkovsky

Attempts to classify and include people into categories may lead to strange results, but I was always wondering why Internet searches result in Mikhail Zlatkovsky being classified into the category of art humor. To me this seems incredible - because of his artistic style and the magnitude of his artistic interests and attitudes. You can say politely that he is a class in itself, but I believe that he is from the rare class of geniuses - can you say that you met many of them or even a single one during your lifetime? Here he is. I know when I see one.

Zlatkovsky is an artist of grand visions, creator of visual worlds, even visual universes. Creative visions, existential, sometimes frightening, sometimes beautiful. Visualization of thoughts, values, love, life and sex, political concepts, portrayal of intellectual models...

Born into the family of a senior Soviet Army officer in 1944, Zlatkovsky spent his early years in a small town in occupied Germany which was spared destruction. He was growing in Russian family with its traditions, but had an opportunity to taste European artistic culture, to better understand realities and inconsistencies of this world... And the main features in his character always were and are - inherent originality and extreme independence.

In 1960 he has entered the prestigious Institute of Engineering Physics in Moscow, graduated from it with excellence and began to work on his PhD dissertation. Darker political realities of life in the Soviet Union could not make their almost inevitable imprint on this independent personality. Then, when his dissertation was ready and finished, he came to the realization that the teamwork in the depths of the military-industrial complex was not exactly what he wanted to do in life. Mature scientist he yielded to a passion, which he had from early childhood and became a graphic artist....

I first saw his illustrations, when he was the Art Director in a well known non-conformist Russian Journal 'Khimiya i Zhisn', a small island of creativity and free thought in an ocean of censorship and dullness...I still remember that feeling of excitement from looking at his works.....

Now many years, dozens of international prizes and several lives after that he continues to be unpredictable, creative and prolific. Here you can see a preview - just a few of his works. We plan to exhibit a bigger collection of Zlatkovsky's works on this site in the beginning of 1999.
